April OMG (One Monthly Goal) end of month report

Well, here it is another EOM (end of month) and I have completed my OMG (one monthly goal) for the month!  YAY!

30 Blocks in 30 Days. . . .today is my day!

When I first saw the call for Carla's blog hop I wasn't going to do it. . . but then I started going through the blocks that she had come up with.  They started my mind working overtime. . . and I had to sign up!


Now, you will have to bear with me a little. . . . the stream of consciousness that I went through was really quite extraordinary, or well, I think it was! 


So, the block I chose, Possibility, (you can find Carla's original tutorial for it here)  reminded me of the pop beads we had played with as kids. 
(Please note: except for the picture of my quilt blocks below all pictures were found by doing an "image" search on the internet.  I just copied and pasted the pictures.  They are not mine but are probably copyrighted by others. Just to get the legal stuff out of the way.)

Now, this was during the 1960's (yeah, I am showing my age!). . . . but then I started remembering other things from my child and teen years. . . . and that got me to

Which lead me to think about one of the characters, Huggy Bear, from the show

Now, for those of you not familiar with the show, Huggy Bear was a very extravagant character.  That lead me to another extravagant character:


Lafayette from the True Blood series.



Thinking about Lafayette and True Blood led me to think about vampires.  That led me back to the 1960's with:



I remember being so antsy on the school bus on the way home because I did not want to miss an episode! 


There was a character on the show, Carolyn Stoddard, that was a real "hip" chick:





And all of this lead me to thinking about beaded curtains, that were all the rage "back in the day":





And that thought is what led me to the design of my quilt. . . . . I took Possibility and tipped it on it's side, creating a diagonal set, and, viola!  A quilted beaded curtain!

I found this great fabric that looks like wooden boards for the borders of my quilt to really reinforce the curtain look.

I had all the fabrics in my stash (except for the borders). . . . I do not have any details on the exact lines or manufacturers, but the colored fabrics were both from charm packs that I had.  Since I do not usually purchase pre-cuts I must have gotten them as gifts or thank you's for some of the pattern testing that I have done over the years.


The colors just sent my mind back in time so I knew that the bright colors would be perfect for a fabric beaded curtain.


I haven't worked through all of the design decisions yet, but I am thinking that I may try some ruler work for the quilting.  But that means that I need to practice, practice, practice.
So, my quilt is not completed. . . but it is definitely a fun one.

Memory quilt and pillow for a friend

The mother of one of my friends passed away a little over a year ago.


While she was not able to get many pieces of clothing from her stepfather she was able to get a couple of the favorite shirts that her mother would wear.


She asked me to try to make something that she could use on the couch as a memory.


Here is what I was able to come up with:

Here is another picture of it.  There are 9 squares from the shirts; the rest of the pieces are fabrics from my stash.

I am hoping that you can click on the pictures to see that the center row of squares are actually patterned and not just plain as they appear to me while I am writing this.

The shirt that the center squares came from had a decorative bodice on the front.  Since there were beads and metal decorations on it I was nervous about putting that into the quilt since I was afraid that I might hit the decorations with the long arm.

So I cut that part out of the shirt, added a couple of borders to make it a good size for an 18" pillow form.

I will be giving these pieces to my friend this weekend.  I hope that they bring her some comfort and that she likes what I did.

This was the first time that I had worked on a t-shirt type quilt and, while it was not easy, it was not as difficult as I thought that it was going to be.

I did take a picture!

I had mentioned in a previous post about making a quilt for a banker of ours that was having her first baby.  At that point I did not think that I had taken a picture. . . . but I had, with my iPad.


Since I cannot seem to get the iPad photos to post correctly to Blogger I had to do some "finagling" to get the picture here.


The pattern is Turning Twenty and I used 1930's reproduction fabrics for the quilt.  I quilted it on our long arm in a loopy meandering design.

Our banker friend really liked the quilt. . . . and I am happy that I did get a picture of it.

OMG (One Monthly Goal) plan for April

Well, I am putting the wool table runner on the back burner for now as I have a couple of "deadline" items that need to get done.


I am adding this information to the group over at Patty's blog.  The link will take you directly to the post showing all the goals.


I will have 2 main goals for April, one I can show but the other is a secret until my day for the blog hop.


First goal:


Complete this lap throw

It is made from shirts from the mother of one of my friends.  It measures approximately 49" square so I am thinking it will be a good size for a lap throw while she is watching tv.


I have never done a t-shirt type quilt before so this has been a bit of an adventure, but, so far so good.  I am liking the way it is coming together.


Second goal:


Complete this pillow

This is the front of one of the shirts that was used in the quilt.  There are beads and brads in the design and I was afraid that I might not be able to avoid them on the quilting machine so I decided to make her a pillow.  Once the tan strips are attached and trimmed I just need to make the backing, sew the two pieces together & insert a pillow form.


It will be an 18" pillow.


My third goal is to complete a quilt for a blog hop hosted by Carla over at Creatin' in the Sticks.  My day is April 24th, but you can check out all the projects by going to her website, the blog hop started on April 1st.


So, while I will be mainly working on those items there might be some additional things to show along the way. . . .I have been crocheting and will have some things to show on that front.
