Oh Charleston, part two

In addition to taking the harbor tour we took a carriage ridge around downtown Charleston.  Our tour guide was very funny and informative.

There were two churches that he pointed out. . . . here is the first: St. Philip's Church

And here is the second:  St.Michael's Episcopal Church

I'll be honest. . . . I don't remember what the story was behind this building; nor why I took the picture.  I will have to look up sights in Charleston so that I can add some of the information.

Here again is a picture that I can not identify. . . . it was interesting to me, so I took a picture of it!

This building houses the Confederate Museum, and below it is Charleston's Central Market. . . . where there are all kinds of vendors with crafts (including the sweetgrass baskets), souvenirs, food, etc.

Luckily, the day that we were in downtown Charleston was not a rainy day.  We were told that where the City Market is located is the lowest part of the city. . . and when there are heavy rains the area floods quite quickly.

The days following our tour were pretty rainy. . . . so I am guessing that many of the vendors were not there.

We also took a bit of a walk to see one of the historic houses in Charleston.  On our way we stopped in Washington Park for a bit of a rest.  There was this replica of the Washington Monument in the center of the park:

It was a lovely park.

The house that we toured was the Nathaniel Russell house:

There was a Magnolia tree that was over 100 years old on the grounds. . . . I have never seen such large blooms in my life!  I had to take a "hand selfie" just so that I could show the size of this one flower.

The tree was in full bloom and was wonderful to see.

We were not able to take pictures inside the home. . . . . but, as the internet has everything here are some of what we saw inside the home:

This staircase is not supported from the bottom, it is made in such a way that it supports itself.  It is a spiral staircase and was just magnificent to see.

This is a view from the first floor up to the third.  There is a painted medallion on the ceiling (I think you may have to enlarge the picture to see it.

This is a view of the staircase from the top floor to the ground floor.

These doors separated the "public" part of the house from the "private" part of the house.  The glass is all original.  Our tour guide said that due to the fragile state of the glass they do not open and close the doors any longer.

This room was the music room; it was just beautiful.

That concludes our tour of Charleston, SC.  There were so many other things to see and do. . . .I guess we will just have to go back again when we have more time to visit!
